Roleplaying MMORPG Online Games

MMORPG online games can trace their ancestry back to the tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons®, and so it should come as no surprise that there are players who want to enjoy roleplaying their online game characters as if they were a part of the game’s fantasy world. They enjoy interacting with other characters as if it was the character, rather than the player, doing the interaction. When they communicate with other players, it is as if their character is the one speaking.

Roleplaying can be an incredibly rewarding part of playing mmorpg online games. By letting your character live and breathe as if he was a part of the world, and not just your in-game playing piece, you help make the game experience more immersive and more fun for other players.

How to Roleplay with others in MMORPG Online Games

With roleplaying, it is best to be a part of a group that also really enjoys roleplaying. It’s no fun to always be speaking and acting in character if you are surrounded by players for whom roleplaying is something they never do. For many players, raids and slaying enemies is all they want to do—and that’s fine, but if they are not interested in role-playing then don’t try to push them into it. Instead, find a group of players that do enjoy spending game time interacting in-character.

Once you have found such a group, learn their boundaries of roleplaying. Some groups want to be in character all the time, while others are more relaxed and will take time out of roleplaying as long as it doesn’t affect the others who are still in-character.

Also find out about the personalities of all of their characters and see if your character will be a good fit. In fact, you want to make sure that both you and your character will be good fits with the group. It is no fun to bring a lighthearted roleplaying approach to the group if they are involved in their own serious or tragic quest, in much the same way as it is no fun to have your character be an evil rogue trying to role-play with a group of paladins.

Remember that your character and the other characters are different from you and the other players. Some players like to role-play romances or feuds with the other characters of the group. If you are not certain that this is simply role-playing between the characters, you may end up misinterpreting the actions of the other player. And this can lead to some embarrassing situations between you and the other players. Make sure that everyone knows that this is just roleplaying and keep your relationships with other players separate from the relationships between your characters.

Some players have gone so far as to forge alliances with members of a guild, only to betray the trust that was placed in them all as part of what they consider roleplaying. In EVE Online®, a character spent quite a bit of time working his way up the ranks of a corporation until he was able to get his hands on the corporation’s assets. What no-one knew was that he was spy for an enemy corporation, and once he had control over the target corporation’s assets, he liquidated them and made off with all the in-game money. While this is an example of intensive role-playing, it was likely no fun for the members of the target corporation who had just seen all of their work in building up their corporation disappear in a puff of treason. It is always better to make sure that everyone is having fun in roleplaying—not just you.

Real Life Relationships in MMORPG Online Games

As you get involved in spending more time roleplaying, you will start to build friendships in real life with the other players involved. Some players have started dating people that they met through mmorpg online games, and some have even married other players in real life.

Roleplaying is an excellent way to get to know other players, not only through their characters but as friends too. Give it a try in your next foray into mmorpg online games.
