Grinding: Grinding is killing the same enemies over and over again in order to gain experience and in-game currency. Ideally, the enemies you are killing are at an appropriate challenge level for your character. Guild: A guild is an association of player characters who are able to pool resources and go on raids together.

IC, OOC: In character and Out of Character, respectively. For groups that enjoy roleplaying, they would want to have all interactions between their characters done as if it was done by the characters, rather than the players. For these groups, going OOC is discouraged.

Instance: An instance is a copy of a dungeon or battlefield that is kept apart from the rest of the game while players are raiding it. This way, multiple groups can raid a dungeon at the same time and each group will be raiding their own copy.

Kill Stealing: A discouraged practice of attacking the same enemy as another character is fighting in order to get the reward for the kill.

Loot: Loot is treasure found on a defeated enemy.

Mob: There are two meanings for this word. The first is used to refer to a “mobile object” or game-controlled enemy or monster and this can be used to refer to a single enemy or group of enemies. The second is where a character is overwhelmed or “mobbed” by a group of monsters.

NOOB: Short for newbie, or new player. It’s often used to insult a new player who has either damaged his own allies or otherwise done something stupid.

PK: Player Killer or Player Kill. This refers to a player who primarily tries to kill off the characters of new and low-level characters who have wandered into the PvP zones of mmorpg online games.

Pull: A tactic where one character, usually with a ranged weapon, attracts the attention of enemies to draw them into a place where the rest of the character’s party can finish them off.

PvP: Player versus Player refers to the part of the game where players can have their characters fight against and kill other player characters. This is different from PvE or “Player versus Environment,” which is where player characters fight against game-controlled enemies.

PWN, PWNED: This used to be just a typo for “owned,” which is a way of telling another player that you just defeated his character or that his character sucks. Now, “pwning” someone is to defeat them much more than simply “owning” them.

Raid: A raid refers to a group of player-controlled characters in mmorpg online games that have banded together in order to launch an attack on a “boss” monster or dungeon. Also refers to the act of exploring and looting a dungeon.

RL: Real Life

Spawn: Computer-controlled enemies will “spawn” or appear in the game, typically at their pre-programmed spawn point.

Tank: A character who is built to withstand and deliver massive amounts of damage, typically in close-in combat.

Wipe: The death of all characters in a party in combat or on a raid.

Tips on Using Slang in MMORPG Online Games

Now, knowing all of this slang is one thing, but actually using it properly is another. Remember that mmorpg online games are social, and that interacting with other players is therefore an important part of the game. So, to make sure that you can make a good impression on other players, and to avoid sounding like a noob, you are going to want to learn how to use the slang properly.

The key point of using slang is that is should enhance, rather than impede communication between players. Filling your communications with as much slang as possible not only makes it difficult to understand your messages, but it also marks you as a player who either doesn’t respect the other players enough to be able to talk politely with them, or as a noob who is trying too hard to impress other players.

You will also want to make sure that you are using slang that is appropriate to the game. For example, some games don’t have guilds, they have corporations. Likewise, they may not have “non-PvP” areas, they will have “Hi-Sec” zones. Paying attention to the slang that is used by other players will help you learn the specific language for the game and help you communicate better with other players.
