With over 11 Million subscribers, this fantasy rpg has become a cultural phenomenon spawning comics, novels, and even its own parody web series called: “The Guild.” Players take on the roles of heroic fighters, mages, or healers and challenge the forces that threaten the peace of the land Azeroth. Gameplay uses a 3D engine, and players are able to choose their character’s race, and class, and to customize their appearance and equipment. Gameplay is based on combat with several “realms” or copies of the world allowing Player vs. Player gameplay where players can have their characters fight and kill each other. There are also realms where Player vs. Player is either not allowed or is allowed only with the consent of both players. World of Warcraft® is subscription based and charges a monthly fee to players.
Rift® – A newcomer to the mmorpg online games field, Rift® is another fantasy game set in the world of Telara, which is being invaded by elemental forces through dimensional rifts that periodically open. Characters can either be Guardians, who trust the ways of the Gods of Telara, or Defiants who place their faith in technology. Both factions fight against the elemental forces, but neither faction fully accepts the other. Gameplay uses a 3D engine. The class system allows for a high degree of character customization, allowing the characters to be customized even on a per-encounter basis. Much of gameplay is based around combat against Invasions which give rise to massive multiplayer battles of hundreds of players. Player vs. player is possible, and the game features the expected guilds, auctions, quests, and so forth. The game is subscription-based and charges a monthly fee to players.
Best Online Game – Science Fiction
After fantasy, the next most popular genre for mmorpg online games is science fiction. Typically science-fiction games are set in the far future and characters have access to high technology such as energy weapons and spaceships.
EVE Online® – Without a doubt, EVE online is the best online game for science fiction. This highly popular space-based trading and combat game features stunning 3D graphics and has great depth of play including space combat, piracy, merchant business, and even corporate skullduggery. Unlike most mmorpg online games, EVE Online players interact with the game world through their ships. Much of the gameplay takes place in deep space so the players will be treated to an external view of their ship as it travels, maneuvers, and enters into combat. Space battles are filled with the same level of special effects visuals that you would expect on a big-budget movie. A future development, called DUST 514®, will allow players to actually take part in ground combat actions. The game does allow for Player vs. Player gameplay in certain areas of the in-game universe, and has an active in-game economy that responds to market fluctuations. The game allows for players to band together into corporations and corporations will go to war against each other from time to time. EVE Online is subscription-based and charges a monthly fee to players.
